An Iowa State student was found dead Nov. 29 in a Toledo, Iowa, hotel from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

David Michael Shoger, 19, a sophomore in construction engineering, had checked into the Budget Inn hotel in Toledo on his way back to school after Thanksgiving break, said Toledo police officer, Jeff Bunn.

Doug Resh, a senior majoring in apparel merchandising and a former roommate of Shoger’s, said Shoger crashed his car near Toledo on his way back to Ames. Shoger checked into the hotel Sunday. He died Monday and was found by a hotel clerk Wednesday.

Friends and family were shocked.

“It’s unbelievable. You could name a million guys before Dave who would do that kind of thing,” Resh said.

Shoger’s parents, Mike and Marilynn Shoger, had no explanation for their son’s death.

“He was thinking of changing his course of study and school,” Mike Shoger said.

Shoger is a 1994 graduate of La Salle High School in Cedar Rapids. He was buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cedar Rapids Dec. 2.
