The Des Moines Botanical Center has quite the light show

Only Clark Griswald’s massive holiday light display can compete with the 20,000 lights that fill the Des Moines Botanical Center this season. The display, which debuted Thanksgiving weekend and runs through New Year’s Day, is the largest indoor light display in Central Iowa.

“We have been doing it for the last five or six years,” said Sherry Ackerman, secretary at the Botanical Center.

The Center has adjusted their holiday hours to be open until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Seas of red, pink and white poinsettias along with animated figures also add to the display. The lights are said to reflect off the triangular plexi-glass, creating the impression of a star-filled sky.

“We have community service helpers and horticulture students assist in setting up. They have to be very careful in avoiding the water and setting up good anchors,” Ackerman explained.

In addition, on Saturday and Sunday, Don and Mary Harvey of the Harvey Floral Company will hold a Holiday Plant Bazaar. The couple will be selling and displaying holiday plants suitable for every indoor location.

“They sell all kinds of plants and are really good with answering questions about planting,” Ackerman said. “They make frequent visits to the center, except in the spring when they are busy planting.”

For those shopping fanatics who still haven’t checked off their lists, a Holiday Bazaar sponsored by Cheries Dupree and Rose Mary Jackson, owners of the Jazmilan Collection, will be held on Saturday in the Nelle S. Levitt Classroom. The craft show, featuring housewares, floral arrangements, baskets, pictures, candles and other gift ideas, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m..

“They sell some really neat stuff,” Ackerman added.

Workshops are also being held at the Botanical Center throughout the month. “Accents and Detailing for Evergreen Wreaths” is scheduled for Thursday, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Costs for workshops are $25, $20 for members. You may register in advance by calling Susan Ferguson at 242-2934.

The Botanical Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but will be closed on Christmas and News Year’s Day. Admission remains a nominal 50 cents for college students with their IDs.
