To help celebrate its 15th anniversary, Iowa State’s Margaret Sloss Women’s Center is looking to honor women who have contributed to the Ames and ISU communities.

The spring 1996 issue of its biannual publication, Womenews, will feature up to 10 women, said Claire Anderson Lott, special projects coordinator for the Sloss House. The issue is expected to come out in March, which is also Women’s History Month.

“It’s to celebrate the anniversary and women,” Lott said.

Nominees will be selected on the basis of their leadership and community involvement. However, Lott said, they don’t have to be prominent community leaders.

“Women are kind of expected to volunteer, but they receive little recognition for their work,” she said. “I think that historically women have been in the shadows, especially the activists. A lot of women aren’t in limelight as activists, but they do much volunteer work, such as the volunteers at ACCESS [Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support].”

Lott said she would like to have women from different age groups, socioeconomic levels and ethnicities featured in Womenews.

“We would like to get as diverse a pool as possible,” she said.

The nomination forms, which are due Dec. 15, can be picked up in Room 203 of the Sloss House. Lott said nominees will be interviewed before the final selections are made, hopefully by Jan. 15.

Other projects being planned to commemorate the anniversary include an open house, guest speakers and a fund-raiser to help with renovations.
