The Old Creamery Theater gets ready for the holidays

Beginning this weekend, Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the rest of Charles Dickens’ crew will be celebrating Christmas, Amana style. For what will be the sixth year in a row, The Old Creamery Theatre Company will be putting on a production of the holiday classic A Christmas Carol.

This year’s production, which is being put on as part of the Prelude to Christmas Celebration in Amana, will not resemble productions of the past. The set will be very minimal, with new visual ideas employed to allow the audience’s imagination to wonder.

The changes in the scenery were made mainly to add a new element that the company had been putting on for a time.

“In our adaptation, we have an opportunity to do what we do best: to emphasize the live actor on stage and convey very simply the story’s timeless message by making a strong personal connection with the audience,” said Thomas P. Johnson, director of the show.

The cast will also be larger than in years past, with 10 company members, as well as 11 high school, junior high and elementary school students.

The Old Creamery Theatre Company was founded in 1971 by Thomas P. Johnson and nine theater colleagues. After the original was located in Garrison for a period of time, a second theatre in Amana was opened.

Performances will begin Thursday at 8 p.m. and run until Dec. 17, with Saturday and Sunday performances at 3 p.m. Tickets are $14.50 for adults. For more information, please call (319) 622-6237.
