Deer jumps through downtown windows

A few Ames businesses were surprised by an unexpected visit from a deer Saturday morning.

A large deer jumped through a window of Electronic Engineering, 5th and Burnett, and then jumped through a window in the entryway of First Edition restaurant, 330 Main St., just after 8:15 a.m. Customers at the restaurant were startled by a loud crash and the thrashing deer.

“It was bizarre. We were sitting in the restaurant and [the deer] broke the glass and got into the entryway. She was frightened and jumping around,” said Cathy Ellenberger, First Edition manager.

The deer was injured as it wiggled its way back out of the hole in the glass. There was blood on the glass, Ellenberger said. “We thought it was someone’s dog. Who would think it was a deer?”

Ames police said the deer hasn’t been located.
