Halloween is here

This weekend Living History Farms will be helping central Iowans celebrate Halloween, the old-fashioned way.

Each night, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., the 1875 town of Walnut Hill will be filled with costumed townspeople who will be handing out treats for children 12 and under.

However, the fun will not be restricted to just children. People of all ages will be able to enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, a marshmallow roast, free apple cider, and old-time ghost stories told by master story tellers.

Saturday, a costume contest for dogs will be held, sponsored by The Des Moines Register and the Pet Food Warehouse. The contest will be divided into two classes, adults and children, with four categories: funniest, scariest, best costume and best team effort. Judging will be based on creativity and showmanship. Pre-registration for the contest is required by Friday. There will also be a Rogue’s Gallery of Jack-O-Lanterns, carved and donated by local Iowa celebrities.

Nancy Wente, assistant director, says, “[Our Halloween celebration] is unusual because there are activities for the entire family.”

The Halloween Festivities will run today through Saturday. Admission each night is $2 for trick-o-treaters through age 12, and $1 for those 12 and over. Costumes are optional.
