Drag Ball and Desiree return to Ames

Desiree has been featured at the last four Drag Ball shows at the M-Shop. This year she’s taking on a new task: she’s running it.

“I haven’t really been in charge of it the last few years,” Desiree said.

“But I have ended up basically doing everything on the day of the show. Rod approached me to totally take over this year.”

Drag Ball V will feature the best female impersonators from all around Iowa. The men (women) include Miss Iowa, Molly Madison; Miss Iowa USA-at-Large, Dena Cass; Miss Iowa Rising Star, Sebrena Shaw and Miss Nebraska USA, Mallory Moore. Desiree is currently Miss Des Moines.

“Most of them are a current cast member somewhere else,” she added. “A lot of Saturday’s performers, including myself, are on cast at The Garden in Des Moines.”

The Garden currently features drag shows every Sunday night. The club is also planning to add a similar night between Wednesday and Sunday. The new format will begin by next month.

“I encourage everyone to come with an open mind and an open wallet,” Desiree said. “We do make our money from tips. We also have some other forms of live entertainment planned.”

Portions from Saturday night’s shows will benefit the Ames AIDS Coalition and the All Iowa AIDS Benefit. The AIDS Benefit is scheduled for October 14 in Des Moines. Drag Ball V: Desiree’s Girly Boyz will perform two shows at 8 and 11 p.m. at the Maintenance Shop in the Memorial Union. Tickets are $7/$5 for students.
