Grab your partner and do-si-do down

Iowa State students eager to do-si-do their partners should waltz their way to the First Baptist Church on Saturday night for the first barn dance of the year.

The Central Iowa Barn Association will sponsor the dance which features the Barn Owl Band and caller Lonna Nachtigal.

“We have had some students in the past, but we are hoping for a lot more,” Bettie Swarts said. Swarts is a fiddler for the band and a co-founder of the association. Caller Roger Alexander is also a founder.

CIBD will celebrate their fourth season of barn dances this year. The dances being taught include New England-style contras, reels, circles, squares, polkas and waltzes. New dancers are encouraged to come early to learn the basics.

“We walk through the dances earlier in the night to make things easy for newcomers,” Swarts said.

The Barn Owl Band are scheduled to twang away at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Barn Owls will also play on Nov. 18.

The Pretty Good Band will host the dance along with caller Roger Alexander on Sept. 16. “Bring Your Favorite Dance” night is scheduled for Oct. 21 while Dec. 2 will be “Come All Ye Fiddlers” night.

“It is a nice social evening and a chance to get some exercise,” Swarts added.

The First Baptist Church is located at 200 Lynn Avenue and dancers are to come to the lower east entrance. Everyone is welcome, but participants are required to wear soft-soled shoes. If you have any questions call Roger at 292-5587 or Bettie at 961-7949.
