Teach the children well

Barbara Kashian

Thirteen-year-old Susanna Rodriguez, of Iowa City, plays an interactive game called The Chocolate River. Susanna is one of dozens of high school students participating in the Get A Grip leadership camp at ISU sponsored by the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau, ISU and ISU’s Department of Public Safety. The students learn teamwork through persistence, support, and cooperation. They learn life skills, how to have relationships, and how to overcome obstacles and barriers. The emphasis is not on competition; the goal is to “teach kids how to live. Then drugs and alcohol are out of the equation.”
