Avoiding real lobby reform

Editorial Board

Although a call for lobby reform is certainly in order, the approach that Republicans are taking is not the right path. Their draconian proposal would ban lobbying by non-profit groups that receive public grants, effectively cutting them off at the knees.

This would be an infringement on these organizations’ rights to argue their case. Not surprisingly, liberal groups such as Planned Parenthood would be the ones most affected, many of which work steadily on behalf of those in need.

By only curbing non-profit lobbying, the Republicans are also creating a guise for real lobby reform. The actual problem lies with the excessive donations given to legislators in the form of direct payments, gifts and other hidden bonuses. This is where stricter controls are needed.
