Today is the final day of Sunrayce 95. The solar car race will run 54 miles from Aurora, Colorado to the finish line at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado.

On Tuesday Iowa State’s solar car, PrISUm Cynergy, finished 22nd overall in the standings, and finished the 152 mile leg of the race to St. Francis, Kansas on its own power. Iowa State began the day in 14th place. At the end of day six the solar cars will have covered 990 miles of racing.

“The students kept the pace of the car steady, knowing that there was plenty of sunlight and not wanting to use up the stored battery power,” said Jim Hill, faculty advisor to Team PrISUm, in a press release.

“Tomorrow’s leg is the longest of the race and it’s smart to store as much energy as possible because there isn’t any guarantee the sun will be shining like today,”Hill said

In the overall standings, MIT still leads, followed by Minnesota, George Washington, and Cal-Poly Pamona. As the cars head west they face the challenge of rising elevation.

Volunteer students design, build and race the solar powered vehicle. In 1990 the team finished 17th
