Summerfest planned

It’s not quite the first day of summer, but on Sunday, the first

festival of the summer will begin, to raise funds for the Waterfront

Improvement Project at Hickory Grove Park.

The Story County Conservation Board is sponsoring Summerfest, which

will be held at the park. The event is a part of the board’s season-long

efforts to raise money for the construction.

“The project is hoping to raise $80,000 to renovate the campground and

beach facilities,” said Ranger Carol Williams.

The improved waterfront area will include a new playground and more

wheelchair accessibility paths around the park, she added.

Summerfest activities will start at 2 p.m. with the games such as

rolling-pin tosses, buffalo chip throwing and three-legged races. Other

events will be pie-eating contests and a kiddie tractor pull.

The Story County Cattleman’s Association will be cooking dinner

starting at 4:30. The Prairie Trail Bluegrass Band will be performing from

5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Hickory Grove Park is located 4 miles east of Nevada, 1 mile south of

U.S. Highway 30.
