The Workspace, located in the east basement of the Memorial Union, is a creative space for students and visitors alike to stop by for various arts and crafts.

The doors of The Workspace remain open to all from 2-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.

Crafts include everything from ceramics to plant terrariums and typically rotate out on a monthly basis.

According to Iowa State’s student engagement website, all ages are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Prices of crafts range from $8 to $20, with free crafts offered to students during ISU AfterDark events.

In addition to walk-in crafts, The Workspace hosts classes for students to learn new skills. Classes include activities such as woodworking and clay sculpting.

On top of classes and monthly crafts, The Workspace hosts paint-your-own pottery during open hours. The theme of the pottery changes on a weekly basis, and the full list of themes for the fall semester can be found on the student engagement website. This week’s theme is sun and moon, which includes rainbow, sunflower and other astrological-shaped pottery for students and their guests to paint and decorate. Other themes for the fall semester include Dungeons & Dragons and adorable animals.

“We welcome everyone to stop in and paint something. It’s a great way to decompress from classes,” said Iowa State senior and Workspace employee Natalie McDaniels.

In collaboration with the ISU Gaffer’s Guild, the Workspace also hosts the Art Mart. This annual spring art sale is a great spot to pick up dorm decorations as well as gifts for friends and family. The sale is hosted in the Memorial Union Art Gallery from May 9-12 and showcases works from a variety of artists and creatives, including some of Iowa State’s own. Items for sale will include upcycled jewelry, blown glass and even live caricatures on select days.

Whether you’re looking for that perfect Mother’s Day gift or simply stopping by to paint and blow off some steam with friends, The Workspace is a great place to rejuvenate and get your creative juices flowing.
