Events on campus: Sustainapalooza, comedy night, art walk and more

As the weather in Ames begins to warm up, events on campus are heating up as well. Iowa State has a full lineup of activities for students to enjoy throughout the week of Feb. 26.

Monday, Feb. 26

The Workspace
Pain Your Own Pottery – Cereal Bowl Week: This week’s paint your own pottery craft will give participants an opportunity to design and decorate their very own cereal bowl. Students and visitors can drop by during The Workspace’s operating hours from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. To-go kits will also be available for purchase.

Secret Book Safe: Create your own secret stash box during The Workspace’s secret book safe stash event taking place all week long. Various decorating materials will be available for participants to personalize their stash boxes. The cost of the craft is $8 in the studio and $10 for to-go kits.

Black History Month Magnet: Students and visitors can choose from a set of inspirational messages and imagery to create a set of four glass magnets. The event will take place all week during The Workspace’s operating hours and will cost $8 in studio or $9 to-go.

Lecture Series: Leveraging Crisis Into Opportunity
Monday’s Lecture Series event, titled Leveraging Crisis Into Opportunity, will be held by Christine Ervin. With 30 years of experience, Ervin works to address pivotal issues, including climate change, greening the built environment and clean energy.

Tuesday, Feb. 27

Sustainapalooza
Sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, Sustainapalooza features a variety of engaging opportunities in relation to sustainability connection both on and off campus. Students can take part in a clothing swap and donate any unused or unwanted clothing. Sustainapalooza will host a variety of organizations during Tuesday’s event including Good Earth Student Farm, Habitat for Humanity and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The event will take place from 5-8 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall.

Open Mic Night
Students are invited to take the stage during Tuesday’s open mic night. All talents, including comedy, singing and dancing are welcome to be performed at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Maintenance Shop.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

Student Innovation Center Creativity Carnival
The Student Innovation Center’s Creativity Carnival allows students to unleash their creativity through various challenges, creative activities and interactive art. Prizes, freebies and free food will also be available to attendees. The event will take place from 2-7 p.m. on the first floor of the Student Innovation Center.

Art Walk: Celebrating George Washington Carver
Students and visitors are invited to participate in an art walk led by docent Steve Petska, honoring Iowa State’s own George Washington Carver. The walk will take place from noon to 1 p.m. and will begin from the Curtiss Hall rotunda.

Pillow Pets Class
The Workspace Pillow Pets event will offer participants the chance to create a pillow printed with a picture of their own pets. Materials for sewing and decorating will be provided at the event. The event will take place from 6:30-9 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Workspace and will cost $32 for students and $42 for the general public.

Thursday, Feb. 29

Lecture Series: ​​Fatphobia and Capitalism
Thursday’s Lecture Series event will be held by Ragen Chastain, a leader in weight science, weight stigma, health and healthcare. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.

Cyclone Cinema: The Marvels
This week’s Cyclone Cinema movie, The Marvels, will show at 7 p.m. in Carver 0101. The movie will also have showings of the movie on Friday and Saturday. All students are invited to drop by for the weekly free movie event.

ISU Theatre: Always Plenty of Light at the Starlight All Night Diner
What can be described as a cross between “Jurassic Park,” “Back to the Future” and “Fried Green Tomatoes, ISU Theatre’s latest production will begin on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Fisher Theater. Admission is $20 for adults and free to all Iowa State students and children.

Comedy Night with Liza Treyger
Lisa Treyger, a stand-up comedian who has appeared in titles such as “The King of Staten Island,” “Survival of the Thickest” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope,” will perform at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Maintenance shop. The event begins at 8 p.m. and is free to all students and visitors.

Friday, March 1

Date Night at the Brunnier Art Museum
Students and visitors are invited to change up their typical date night at Friday’s Date Night at the Brunnier Art Museum. The event will feature a free craft and provide an opportunity to check out the array of art located in the museum. The event will take place from 5-7 p.m. in the Brunnier Art Museum.

The Fashion Show: Guest Designer Launch Party
The Fashion Show at Iowa State is one of the largest student-run fashion shows in the nation. The organization will announce this year’s guest designer at a launch party from 6-8 p.m. at the Kingland Hub in the Gerdin Business Building.
