Former Texas state senator and Nikki Haley Caucus Captain, Kel Seliger, writes the results of the Caucus Captains count the ballots submitted by the attendees of the 2024 Iowa Republican Caucus, Memorial Union, Jan. 15, 2024.

Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden remain frontrunners in the 2024 presidential election after winning numerous caucuses and primaries in the past two weeks.

While former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley became the first woman to win a Republican Party primary contest, her only win was in Washington, D.C. and Trump has won the other six contests since sweeping Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. Biden has won each race without a significant competitor in the Democratic party.

Heading into Super Tuesday, Haley remains in the race for the GOP presidential candidate as the only major opponent to the former president.

Current delegate status:

  • Donald Trump – 273
  • Nikki Haley – 43
  • Ron DeSantis (dropped out) – 9
  • Vivek Ramaswamy (dropped out) – 3

A candidate must gain 1,215 delegates to win the Republican party’s nomination, and 854 of 2,429 delegates will be awarded on Super Tuesday. A delegate tracker can be found on the Associated Press website.

South Carolina

Trump received 59.8% or 452,496 of the 451,905 total votes cast during the South Carolina primaries on Feb. 24, according to the Associated Press.

Haley came in second, acquiring 299,084 votes, or 39.5%. Other reported candidates included Ron DeSantis at 0.4% and Vivek Ramaswamy at 0.1%.

There were 50 available delegates for this primary, 47 of which were gained by Trump. Haley earned the remaining three because the state gives three delegates for every Congressional district won.

“I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president,” Haley said. “I’m a woman of my word.”

Michigan Primaries and Republican Caucus

Michigan hosted its primaries for the Democratic and Republican parties Feb. 27. Trump and Biden won their respective parties, according to the Associated Press.

Trump won the Republican primary with 758,892, or 68.1% of the votes. Haley followed with 26.2%, totaling 296,328 votes. Other candidates, which included “uncommitted,” received 3%.

Michigan has 55 delegates to offer, 16 of which are won during the primaries. Twelve delegates went to Trump, and the remaining four went to Haley.

In the Democratic race, Biden won 81.2% of the votes, totaling 623,415. He was followed by “uncommitted” at 13.2% and Marianne Williamson with 3.0% of the votes.

There were 117 delegates available. Biden won 115 delegates, and the remaining two were assigned to the “uncommitted” option.

The vote for “uncommitted” was a planned movement meant to show disdain for Biden’s policies regarding the war in Gaza and urge Biden to back a permanent ceasefire, according to the New York Times.

The topic has gained significant momentum recently, which follows Aaron Bushnell, a former United States Air Force serviceman, self-immolating in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C. to show support for Palestine.

Bushnell died in the act, and his last words, “Free Palestine,” were caught on camera.

Ahead of Super Tuesday, other Democratic competitions may expect similar results as the movement expands.

Michigan hosted its Republican Caucus on Saturday, which Trump also won.

Trump received 98% of the vote, totaling 1,575 votes, according to ABC News. Haley garnered 2%, or 36, of the total votes. Trump gained all 39 delegates in this race.

Idaho

The Potato State hosted its Republican caucus Saturday, and Trump won with 84.9% of the vote, totaling 33,603 votes, according to the Associated Press.

Haley finished in second place with 13.2% of the vote, totaling 5,221 votes. Trump gained all 32 delegates in this race.

Missouri

Missouri hosted its Republican caucus Saturday. Trump won all of the 924 state delegates, according to the Associated Press. The results were released by a statewide delegate count, not a vote total.

Trump gained all 51 Missouri delegates in this race.

District of Columbia

The nation’s capital hosted its Republican primary Sunday, and Haley won the contest with 62.8% of the vote, totaling 1,274 votes, according to the Associated Press. Haley gained 19 delegates in this contest.

Trump garnered 676, or 33.3%, of the votes and gained no delegates in this race. This marks Trump’s first significant loss of the election.

North Dakota

The Peace Garden State hosted its Republican primary Monday, and Trump won the contest with 84.6% of the vote, totaling 1,632 votes, according to the Associated Press. The former president also gained all 29 delegates.

Haley took second place with 14.2% votes, totaling 273 votes.
