Iowa State concluded its final round of play at the Bell Bank “Pay it Forward” Collegiate and shot 27 under par to finish first in the standings above Marquette and Nebraska.
First and second-round showings
At the end of the second round, the Cyclones were tied with the Cornhuskers, shooting 278, 13 strokes better than the opening round. Juniors Zach May and Paul Beauvy led the team, shooting under 143.
May and Beauvy cracked the top 10 after the second round. May tied for eighth and Beauvy for 12th. The duo was trailed by senior Luke Gutschewski and sophomore Owen Sawyer, each with 144, freshman Luke Metcalf with 145 and sophomore Dianchao Wu with 147.
May and Beauvy tied for the lowest round through the opening two stages, each shooting 68.
Iowa State pulls away, takes first
In the final stages, it was May and Beauvy who led the charge. May finished first with 10 under par ahead of Marquette’s Max Lyons at eight under and Nebraska’s Brodie Cunningham at seven under.
Five of the six Cyclone golfers moved up in the standings in the third round, Wu by 17 spots to finish 24th, Gutschewski moved 10 spots to 12th, Sawyer up 15 spots in a six-way tie for 7th, Beauvy nine places to third and May seven spots to take the top spot.
Metcalf finished in a three-way tie for 44th behind Minnesota’s Jack Wetzel.
The next tournament is scheduled to begin Monday in Maricopa, Arizona, as the team enters the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. Times will be announced at a later date.
