LAWRENCE, Kansas — No. 21 Iowa State (21-10, 10,8 Big 12) fell to No. 1 Kansas (27-4, 15-3 Big 12) 85-78 on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.

Here are the four biggest takeaways from the game in Lawrence, Kan.:

Iowa State to play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament

The 2016 Big 12 Championship bracket has officially been made.

Iowa State is the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 3-seed Oklahoma on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Kansas City.

“To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best,” said forward Georges Niang. “So why not start with them.”

The game is scheduled to tip at 8 p.m. Thursday but will likely be pushed later because of earlier games that day.

The Sooners split with the Cyclones in the regular season, with each team winning on their home court. Oklahoma is also on a two-game win streak heading into the tournament.

While it won’t be an easy task to defeat All-American Buddy Hield and company, forward Deonte Burton said they don’t need to overthink it.

“They’re a great team,” Burton said. “We just have to come out and play like we know how to play, and then everything will fall into place.”

Morris tweaks his shoulder

Near the end of the game against Kansas, point guard Monté Morris took a shot fake before immediately attempting a 3-point shot. Morris went up into Kansas’ Frank Mason III, drawing a foul.

Immediately after, Morris winced in pain. It was his shoulder, which essentially led directly into Mason’s body on the play.

Morris hit all three of his free throws but then was subbed out of the game.

“It’s a lot of pain right now,” Morris said after the game. “[The trainer] said it’s more so like a pulled hamstring but in my shoulder.”

Morris finished Saturday with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, playing all 40 minutes of the game.

And while this is a new injury for him, Morris said it shouldn’t affect him going forward.

“I ain’t never had nothing like this, so I don’t know how it’s going to be,” Morris said. “I know I’ll be ready to go by Thursday. But right now, though, I’m in a lot of pain.”

McKay back to his old self

Forward Jameel McKay finished Saturday’s game with 19 points and nine rebounds, going 7-of-9 from the field and making 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

“I wanted to win,” McKay said. “My teammates found me, and I guess my energy was better and my effort was better.”

Earlier in February, McKay was suspended for a couple of games for a violation of team rules. Now, McKay said he’s back and “all-in” and Prohm can see it, too.

“I think [McKay is] back with good spirit and good heart,” said ISU coach Steve Prohm. “He was terrific. His energy was great.”

Burton injury update

In the second half of the game, Burton took an elbow to the face from Kansas’ Perry Ellis, drawing a flagrant one foul.

Burton went down to the floor in front of the media table, bleeding from his cheek.

“I honestly don’t remember [what happened],” Burton said after the game. “All I know is feeling it in my face and then my neck, and then I didn’t know what happened. I just knew I was hit.

“My tooth went through my cheek.”

After getting a bandage on his cheek, Burton returned to the game to hit both of his free throws. He was taken right back out and didn’t return to the game.

Burton said after the game that his face was still in a lot of pain but that he wouldn’t have to go through any concussion protocol. He plans on being ready to go for the Big 12 Championship on Thursday.
