ISU students have the benefit of seeking legal services on campus free of charge.

Student Legal Services is funded entirely by the Student Government and provides two attorneys who help advise and represent students in a variety of cases, according to the Student Legal Services website.

How do students know if they have a legal problem?

Michael Levine, legal consultant for Student Legal Services, provided legal problems students may experience:

  • Anything involving the police, which includes something as simple as a traffic ticket to something as complex as an arrest or investigation with law enforcement.
  • Any driver’s license issues.
  • Any contract or purchasing issues, car issues or property issues.

“I think basically, the thing that would be most helpful for freshmen to know is to seek legal advice before you do anything in any of those contexts, so that you get the advice that will help you make the appropriate decision,” Levine said.

Levine said there’s no charge whatsoever to speak with an attorney, and students will get advice from licensed attorneys.

The service is also confidential, so students don’t have to worry about anyone else finding out about their situation.

“A lot of people, the first thing they’ll say is, ‘Well, I can’t afford an attorney,’’ Levine said. “They can certainly afford student legal services because there’s no charge for them to come in and have a consultation with one of the attorneys.”
