Three different athletes in different events represented the Cyclones for the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championship at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Edward Kemboi continued his quest for a victory in the 800-meter race, and so far, so good for the Kenyan native, who said he has his eyes on the prize in his senior season.

And he looked ready as ever.

He turned on his signature afterburners in the last 100 meters for a 1:45.48 time, which is tied for the best in the NCAA this outdoor season. He also became the first Iowa Stater to finish under the 1:46 mark and broke his own school record.

He finished first in his heat for the preliminaries and grabbed an automatic bid to the finals.

He will go for his fourth attempt at a title in the 800 at the national meet at 7:50 p.m. Friday.

German shot putter Jan Jeuschede finished in 13th place with a 62-foot-1-inch throw. The spot earned him third team all-American honors.

Decathlete Taylor Sanderson completed his first day of the decathlon with a score of 3,886 and two personal records, putting him 14th in the field.

He grabbed the most points in one of his strongest events, the high jump. He broke his personal best in the event with a jump of 23-08 and finished in ninth place to add 864 points to his score.

His second personal mark came in the 400-meter dash, where he crossed the line at 49.83 and a 13th place finish for 822 points.

Sanderson will complete the decathlon and will be the only Cyclone at day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He will start at noon Thursday in the 110-meter hurdles.”
