10 things to do as an ISU family

1. Show ISU spirit by participating in Cyclone Family Weekend 

Cyclone Family Weekend will take place Sept. 25-27. There won’t be a home football game, but there will still be a great variety of events to attend, according to www.familyweekend.iastate.edu. The Cyclone Family Weekend webpage will provide updated information on what events will be available and how to register. 

2. Attend an ISU football game at Jack Trice Stadium. Even better, attend Iowa State’s game against rival Iowa on Sept. 12

The Cyclones play six home games this season at Jack Trice:

• Sept. 5 – Northern Iowa

• Sept. 12 – Iowa

• Oct. 3 – Kansas

• Oct. 17 – TCU

• Oct. 31 – Texas (Homecoming)

• Nov. 14 – Oklahoma State

3. Experience Hilton Magic at an ISU basketball game

The Cyclones will attempt a three-peat as Big 12 tournament champions in the 2015-16 season.

4. Schedule a visit to Reiman Gardens

Plan a visit to the 14-acre garden online at www.reimangardens.com. Plants featured at Reiman Gardens include aromatic herbs, Dr. Griffith Buck roses, a towering palm tree, native prairie species and much more.

There are is also the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing, which features up to 800 butterflies that offer an “ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors.”

5. Play a round of golf at Veenker Memorial Golf Course

Veenker Memorial Golf Course is the home of the ISU golf club and the men’s and women’s golf teams. Golf fees are available at www.veenkergolf.com/rates.asp, and there are discounts for ISU students.

6. Visit the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market

The Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market is located on the 300 block of Main Street in downtown Ames. The market is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., May 3 to Oct. 25. Music and a wide variety of vendors are provided each Saturday. 

7. Attend a Central Iowa Symphony

The Central Iowa Symphony will perform four concerts during the 2015-16 concert season at the Ames City Auditorium.:

  • Season Opener – Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, 7:30 p.m.
  • Winter Wonderland – Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, 7:30 p.m.
  • Young Artists Concert – Sunday, March 6, 2016, 3 p.m.
  • Season Finale – Sunday, May 1, 2016, 3 p.m.

8. Take a shopping trip to the North Grand Mall

North Grand Mall is located at 2801 Grand Ave. The mall is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The mall features more than 30 dining and shopping options. 9. Visit the Brunnier Art Museum

The Brunnier Art Museum is located on the second floor of the Scheman Building at Iowa State. Cost to visit is free, but there is a suggested donation of $3 per visitor. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

10. Spend a day at the Furman Aquatic Center

The Furman Aquatic Center is located at 1635 13th St.

The $10 million aquatic center features a 550-foot lazy river with a waterfall, two water slides that are more than 200 feet in length, a 50-meter pool with a 150-foot drop slide and basketball hoops and a 5,000-square-foot recreational pool.
