Koree Willer’s pro prospects

With just two years of college soccer under her belt, Koree Willer still has plenty of goals she wants to achieve at the NCAA level. Anything after that is a long way off still and Willer is cautious of looking past any games, much less two full seasons.

Still, after a pair of spring exhibition games against professional soccer teams, the wheels have begun to turn in Willer’s head.

“I never had really considered professional soccer in the past, but it’s definitely becoming more of a thought in my head for sure,” Willer said.

The opportunity to play against professionals and athletes she looked up to was an eye-opening experience. Playing in a big time stadium against some of the sports iconic players sparked some curiosity in Willer’s mind.

“Definitely being directly exposed to that, I would for sure say it had an effect on me,” Willer said. “You can’t help but compare yourself.”

As far as ISU coach Tony Minatta is concerned, Willer can essentially do whatever she sets her mind to, though he did not specifically mention playing at the professional level.

“The ceiling is as far as she wants to take it,” Minatta said “She has the athletic ability, all the intangibles, everything that you need to be a top player. The only one that’s going to get in the way is herself, so for me the ceiling is as high as she really wants to take it.”

But that’s still more than two years away. For now, she is focused on next season, getting back to the Big 12 tournament after missing out on it last season and, of course, beating rival Iowa.
