Back to the Beginning: ISU men’s track, field competes in Des Moines meet

As the ISU men’s track and field team seemed to leave home for Iowa’s capital, for some of the athletes, it was a small homecoming.

Many athletes on Iowa State call central Iowa home and with the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake, they were able to compete in the same meet they participated in through much of their high school days.

One of those Cyclones is Henry Kelley, who hails from Waukee, Iowa, and currently holds the high school discus record at 167-6.00.

The redshirt senior set his personal record in the hammer throw at the Tiger Track Classic on April 3 and 4. Although he wasn’t able to better that mark, Kelley was still able to finish first in the event with his 183-08 throw, which was more than two feet better than the second-place thrower.

“I was feeling good today, but I couldn’t just put it all together even though I felt I was on the verge of a breakthrough,” Kelley said. “I get a T-shirt that says ‘Jim Duncan Invitational Champion’ and I’ve been joking all week saying that I really wanted a T-shirt., so, I had a really good time.”

It was also a welcome return for sophomore Trey Achterhoff. He competed in the 4×100 relay, the 400-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. In the 200, Achterhoff finished in 56.40 seconds — 2.87 seconds slower than his personal best — but was hampered by some of the middle hurdles, which affected the rest of his race.

Achterhoff wasn’t exactly thrilled with the results but he enjoyed competing in the event he has been a part of since his early days in the sport.

“[Drake] is where I competed in high school and I have a lot of memories here,” Achterhoff said. “I opened up the race well but I had some struggles in the middle hurdles and then the rest of my race blew up. That was frustrating but there was some encouragement from the first half.”

The ISU men’s sprint team was on full display at the meet with five members making the trip down Interstate 35.

Logan Schneider was able to make a statement with his first place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 14.80 seconds.

Mark Sitek and Jared Ingram competed in the 100-meter run and came in at marks of 11.24 seconds and 11.36 seconds, respectively.

“We’re staying healthy, so we’re making good strides,” Sitek said. “We just have to keep working for the Big 12s and stay healthy for them.”

Four other sprinters raced in the 200 but no one was able to crack the top five.

The Cyclones will be back at Drake for the Drake Relays on April 22. After spending two days at Drake for the meet, the team is ready to get started.

“It will give us some good motivation for practice,” Achterhoff said. “We will be working hard. I think that we will push hard these next couple weeks here. This is a good chance for us to get some good training in before we start tapering for conference.”
