ISU drops doubleheader against Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s offensive fire power in an April 4 doubleheader was too much to handle for the Cyclones.

In the first game of the doubleheader against the Sooners, Iowa State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Aly Cappaert batted home junior Brittany Gomez in the first.

The lead lasted a while for the Cyclones, until the Sooners had a four-run third inning to make the score 4-1.

The Sooners extended their lead in the fifth, when again they added four more runs to make the score 8-1.

In the sixth, the Cyclones added one more run to their score when again, Cappaert brought home Gomez.

With that, the final score in the first game was 8-2 in favor of the Sooners.

The second game was almost an identical outcome, except for the Sooners mustering even more fire power.

The Sooners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, but the Cyclones cut the lead in half in the second when senior Maddie Reese blasted the ball over the center field wall to make the score 2-1.

That one run was all that Iowa State would scratch out in game two.

The Sooners went on to score four runs in the second and ten runs in the fourth. The final score was 16-1 in favor of Oklahoma.

During the second game, Gomez recorded her third straight 50-hit season, and she is now tied for fourth on the all-time hitting list at 191 hits throughout her career.

The Cyclones will attempt to get back on their winning way when they take on Drake April 8 at 4 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
