Iowa State opens conference play with a loss

Iowa State opened Big 12 play against number five Oklahoma with a loss.

The fifth ranked Sooners jumped out early against the Cyclones when sophomore pitcher Katie Johnson hit an Oklahoma batter with the bases loaded in the first. That gave Oklahoma an early 1-0 lead over Iowa State.

After the early run by the Sooners, the scoring stalled for awhile.

The Cyclones were finally able to get there first hit of the game when junior Aly Cappaert hit a single in the fourth.

In the fifth, the Sooners tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0 over the Cyclones.

In sixth, the Cyclones climbed back into the game when Cappaert hit her third home run of the season and brought home sophomore Cathlin Bingham along for the ride, to cut the Sooners lead to 3-2.

That was as close as Iowa State would get to Oklahoma. The Sooners added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final score 4-2.

Sooner’s freshman pitcher Paige Parker got her fifteenth win of the season as she pitched all seven innings against Iowa State.

Cappaert got two hits while batting three times.

The Cyclones look to avenge their loss as they take on Oklahoma in a doubleheader April 4. First pitch for the first game is at 12 p.m. and the second game starts at 2 p.m.
