What to pack for Spring Break

Alex Maher

Spring Break can take students to many destinations, ranging from the sandy beaches of Gulf Shores to the snowy slopes of Colorado or the comfort of your own home. Wherever you end up, it is your travel wear that is the most essential. Many college students will pick leggings and a sweatshirt or tee to travel in, but spice it up this year and add some style to your travels.

• Cold to hot: When traveling between vastly different temperatures, the key is in the layering. In this case, more is better. You can always remove layers. Begin your look with a simple tee in a neutral color. Next, add a cozy sweater or relaxed blazer. These can always be removed but they add polish to your look while keeping you warm. Bottoms can be tricky when transitioning between temperatures but there are two options. The first option is to start with a pair of pants, such as jeans or leggings, and pack a pair of shorts in your carry-on to change into once you arrive. If you don’t want to deal with changing, the second option is to wear pants that can be rolled up. Leggings and jeans work well with this look too, since they are lightweight. To finish off the look, simply slip on a pair of flats. These shoes are both comfortable and versatile.

Alternatively, on your way back, try a lightweight button-down with a vest. A button-down has the perfect comfort level for traveling in style. It allows you to roll up your sleeves when in the warmth and roll them down when you reach the chilly temperatures once again. A vest is the best option to keep the balance of warm and cool. You can also pack this in your carry-on for when you return to the cold.

• Flight: Airports are always a hassle when it comes to being stylish. Layers are a good option when flying but be careful of wearing too much. Temperatures in the airport can fluctuate and going through security doesn’t make that easy. To avoid having to take off belts, jackets and jewelry, try starting with a lightweight oversized knit with long sleeves. If the airport is cold, your arms are protected. But if it suddenly becomes warm, you can easily roll up your sleeves and still look stylish. Next, try to find your most comfortable jeans. Wearing denim on a flight may seem uncomfortable, but with just the right amount of stretch, you will be able to relax for numerous hours without having to adjust your waistband. Up next is accessories. Since most will be have to be removed when entering through security, try to keep these to a minimum. The first item to start with is a scarf. Try not to pick one that is too thick or chunky, like a knit, because you will most likely overheat on the plane. Choose a lightweight fabric like cotton, so you aren’t itchy or uncomfortable. Finally, slip on a pair of flats. Travelers walk around quite a bit, so comfort is the name of the game here. Since shoes must be removed at security, try wearing a pair of no-show socks to prevent any germs.

• Roadtrip: Whether you are road tripping cross-country or to a bordering state, you will most likely be in a car for several hours and it is essential to be as comfortable as possible. When packed with people, cars tend to get warm, so make sure you have layers you can remove or put on. A simple white tee, black leggings and a chambray shirt over top with a pair of comfy sandals is the perfect combination. While kicking back and listening to the radio or chatting uncontrollably about how you can’t contain your excitement for the coming week, you are able to relax in comfort before it is your turn to drive.

No matter where you are headed, it is best to do so in style. Happy traveling!
