Animals are often considered part of the family, but too many are forced to suffer abuse. Columnist Ward asks that we all do our part to end animal abuse in the United States.

1. Pitbull’s jaws lock.

People have been lead on to believe that, like alligators, pitbulls can lock their jaws when biting so their victim cannot escape. A professor at the University of Georgia concluded that there isn’t any unique part of a pitbull that would cause them to lock their jaws.

2. Treadmills = dog fighting dogs.

Dog fighting is illegal in the United States and some of those who have been convicted have owned dog treadmills but that doesn’t mean everyone who owns a dog treadmill is a dog fighter or that the dog is a dogfighting dog. Dog treadmills are common for dogs who don’t have a backyard to run around.

3. You should avoid adopting pitbulls. Pitbulls deserve homes just like any other dog and even though they have this reputation, you should judge them on their current personality. Even it the dog doesn’t have a long history on file, if he is sweet and happy, a happy home will only encourage that personality.
