ISU swimming, diving remains in second place after day two

Iowa State maintained its second place position through day two at the Big 12 Championship on a day to remember for the Cyclones.

This day included four Cyclones earning second-team All-Big 12 honors, 14 personal records and six trips to the podium.

The events for the day included the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.

Freshman Mary Kate Luddy led the Cyclones with a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, earning her second-team All-Big 12 honors. Luddy is now second all-time in ISU history in this event.

Kasey Roberts was next up, carrying the freshman torch with a school record-holding performance in the preliminary heat of the 200-yard individual medley. Roberts ended up taking fourth in the event and shared a spot on the podium with senior Sarah Deis, who finished seventh.

Senior Amanda Paulson added to her collection of five Big 12 honors with a seventh place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

The divers were successful at the Big 12 Championship as well on day two. Julie Dickinson and Elyse Brouillette gathered up second-team All-Big 12 honors, finishing in fourth and sixth, respectively.

To cap off day two, the relay team of Loeschke, Roberts, Paulson and Townsend placed third in the 400-yard medley relay in a time good for fifth all-time at Iowa State.

Texas has a commanding lead as predicted, leading the way at 402 points through seven events. Iowa State holds its position in second at 205.5. Texas Christian is in third at 158.5, Kansas is in fourth at 150 and West Virginia is currently in last at 140.

Day three of the Big 12 Championships will begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 27.

The events for the day will include the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay. 3-meter diving will also take place on the third day of competition.
