At times it was five shots, at others it was nine, and every number in between. Whatever Chonlada’s Chayanun lead was in the final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, it was never in doubt.

The senior notched her first collegiate victory by five shots in wire-to-wire fashion against a field that featured five top-25 teams and over a dozen individuals in the top 100 of the Golfweek rankings.

Though Chayanun’s victory came in one of Iowa State’s traditionally toughest tournaments, the stingiest opponent she overcame may have been the demons from a near-miss just one week before.

On Feb. 10 at the UCF Challenge, Chayanun held a share of the lead heading into the final round. After six career top-10 finishes, she was as close as she had ever come to finding the winner’s circle, but had a day to forget after posting a nine-over-par round of 81 to fall to a tie for 24th place.

This week, Chayanun sealed the deal to become the first Cyclone to earn medalist or co-medalist honors this season and the first since 2007 to record an outright victory.

Her team, No. 33 Iowa State almost found the winner’s circle in the team portion of the event. After briefly owning the lead midway through the final round, the Cyclones finished in third place out of 15 teams and eight strokes behind champion No. 6 Arkansas.

For the second week in a row, Chonlada Chayanun and Celia Barquin were the top-two Iowa State finishers.

Barquin tied for 20th place out of 82 golfers with rounds of 74, 77 and 71 to end up at six-over-par.

Tying for 34th place are junior Cajsa Persson and freshman Nattapan Siritrai. Persson posted rounds of 77, 76 and 75, while Siritrai posted totals of 76, 72 and 80.

Lastly, freshman M.J. Kamin tied for 77th place with rounds of 81, 87 and 77.

The ISU women’s golf team will next compete at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. on March 2. Chayanun will have a chance to become the first back-to-back victor under Martens’ 11-year tenure at Iowa State.
