A good round turned into a great round for Chonlada Chayanun as three birdies in her final five holes allowed her to ascend the leaderboard.

With a five-under-par round of 67, Chayanun is leading the No. 32/32 (Golfweek/Golfstat) ISU women’s golf team, which, like Chayanun, is in second place at the UCF Challenge after the first of three rounds.

In ideal scoring conditions at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., three Cyclones recorded rounds of par or better en route to a seven-under-par team total of 281. With two rounds to go on Feb. 9 and 10, Iowa State trails No. 11/14 Vanderbilt by four shots.

Along with Chayanun’s low round that only had one blemish on the scorecard, Celia Barquin also posted a sub-70 round for Iowa State.

Barquin recorded a bogey-free 69 and is tied for fourth place out of 96 golfers.

With an even-par round of 72, Cajsa Persson was the third Cyclone with a round of par or better. She is tied for 23rd place.

M.J. Kamin contributed the fourth qualifying score with a 73, the lowest score of her freshman campaign. She is tied for 31st.

Nattapan Siritrai recorded a 78, though her first-round score is not counted for team scoring.

Second round play will begin Feb. 9 at 8:30 a.m. EST.
