Iowa State won, but not in the fashion ISU coach Fred Hoiberg would have preferred.

It was another tight, low-scoring game for No. 17 Iowa State, as it edged out Oklahoma State 63-61 in its Big 12 opener.

Iowa State’s shooting woes, which began in Brooklyn, N.Y. versus South Carolina, carried over to Hilton Coliseum against the visiting Cowboys on Jan. 6.

The wind chill hit 20 below zero outside of the arena, but the iciest chill came from the shooting-hands of the Cyclones, who scored only 26 points in the initial half on 35.7 percent shooting from the field.

Oklahoma State effectively slowed the pace of the game by using its length to disrupt ISU three-point shooting and by forgoing opportunities for offensive rebounds in favor of rushing a number of players back on defense after each possession’s first shot attempt.

The ISU defense answered the call, however, holding the Cowboys to only 21 points on 9-of-28 shooting and forcing six turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The second half played drastically differently, as the total of 47 points in the first stanza was surpassed roughly 10 minutes into the closing half.

Both teams saw an offensive uptick, trading blows and mini-runs, which kept the game close all the way to the final whistle.

It was ISU senior Dustin Hogue who answered the call for the Cyclones down the stretch, scoring 17 points, including Iowa State’s final seven points of the game.

Hogue complimented his offensive effort with eight rebounds and one tremendous and crucial block of a Tavarius Shine three-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining on the clock to preserve a two-point ISU lead.

Oklahoma State’s Phil Forte III caught the ensuing inbounds pass and fired up a deep three, which was also partially blocked by Iowa State to complete the win.

Iowa State will take the floor next on the road against No. 14 West Virginia on Jan. 10. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. central time.
