Chase Rey leads Cyclone Hockey to win in return

In his first game back since suffering a serious shoulder injury just over eight months ago, forward Chase Rey had a night to remember.

Rey scored two goals to propel the ISU hockey team (13-9-5) to a 6-1 win over Illinois (15-7-1) on Jan. 9 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The 13th ranked Cyclones started the new year on a positive note, as J.P. Kascsak scored the first goal of the game just under two minutes into the first period. No. 12 Illinois responded promptly, taking advantage of a Cyclone line change and scoring on its first shot of the night.

That is when Rey’s night began.

Following a game misconduct call after Illini forward Matthew Flosi speared Scott Ismond in net, Rey took advantage of the five-minute power play by finding a rebound and depositing it into the top-right corner of the net, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.

Rey was not done, however, as he found a crease through the defense and finished a wrist shot seamlessly past the goaltender’s right pad later in the first period.

The Cyclones added three more goals to complete the win and finish off Rey’s storybook night.

The Cyclones will attempt to earn a sweep of the Illini at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
