Cyclone Hockey takes late-game upset

Cyclone Hockey was on the wrong side of a last-second goal earlier in the season, but that wasn’t the case against Central Oklahoma.

With a late-game goal, the Cyclones downed the No. 2 Central Oklahoma Bronchos with a 5-4 win on Jan. 30 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The ice heated up immediately in an action-filled first period. The No. 10 Cyclones (17-11-5) started the game with some sloppy passes that led to Broncho opportunities. However, the Cyclones quickly turned it around to tally the first goal of the game with frehman Zack Johnson knocking in a puck on the power play.

Senior goalie Scott Ismond, starting in place of senior Matt Cooper, who is Spain-bound, made a big difference for the Cyclones in the period, saving a pair of breakaway opportunities to keep the game at 1-0.

Central Oklahoma came back with a power-play goal of its own later in the opening period after Michael Rivera found the back of the net. The two sides exchanged another pair of goals and a few pushes and shoves to head into the first intermission tied at 2-2.

The pushes and shoves turned into late hits and tripping in the second period. The Cyclones pushed back and took the lead after junior Jake Bruhn crashed the net hard and deflected a puck by the goaltender and into the net.

Ismond stopped 11-of-11 shots in the period to maintain his team’s one-goal lead.

The Cyclones extended their lead to two and looked poised to pull off an upset.

The Bronchos (24-4-1) apparantly didn’t get the memo.

They tacked on two goals to even the score at four and almost forced an overtime, but then came sophomore Preston Blanek.

With 14.1 seconds left, Blanek took advantage of an offensive-zone turnover and beat the opposing goaltender. The win and the approving roar of the crowd followed.

Cyclone Hockey will get another crack at Central Oklahoma at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
