Cyclone Hockey falls in shootout against top-ranked Lions

Cyclone Hockey narrowly lost 2-1 against the top-ranked Central States Collegiate Hockey League team, the Lindenwood Lions, in a shootout on Dec. 5 at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.

The Lions (10-7-2) got on the board first after forward Jake Wyne deflected a shot from the blue line into the net. It was his first goal as a member of the Lindenwood squad. The No. 13-ranked Cyclones (12-9-3) failed to answer, despite out-shooting the opposition 9-8.

What the Cyclones failed to do in the first, they did in the second. The equalizing goal came late in the second period courtesy of a highlight-reel move by Scott Antonsen, who then found the top-left of the net.

The Lions put a barrage on net in the third period, firing 16 shots, but goaltender Matt Cooper stopped all 16 to keep the game tied and send it to overtime. But with nothing going in overtime, the game was sent to a shootout.

The Lions scored on three of four opportunities in the shootout to send the Cyclones home empty handed.

Cooper continued his recent dominance in net, stopping 40-of-41 shots he faced in the loss.

Cyclone Hockey will take on the Lindenwood Lions again at 4 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
