Cyclone Hockey falls in shootout

Cyclone Hockey failed to slow Robert Morris in a 3-2 shootout loss on Dec. 12 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The speed had large contributions to the two goals No. 8 Robert Morris (17-3-1) tallied in the first period. A failed clearance by the No.13 Cyclones (9-8-4) just over five minutes into the first period led to the Eagles’ first goal of the game. The Cyclones also aided the second goal, as a Robert Morris shot deflected off a defender’s stick and beat goalie Matt Cooper.

Following a subpar first period, the Cyclones came back with more hop in their step. A bounce went their way while shorthanded and Scott Antonsen didn’t disappoint, scoring a breakaway goal to cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1.

After 15 penalty-filled minutes, J.P. Kascsak squeezed the puck in behind Robert Morris goaltender Andy DiCristofaro to tie the game at two. Robert Morris put the pressure on late but was unable to put the game winner in, sending it to overtime.

With nothing going in overtime, the game was sent into a shootout.

After six rounds of a shootout, Robert Morris’ Nick Ernst beat Cooper to win the game.

The Cyclones take on the Eagles again at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
