It took five attempts, but Iowa State finally notched a win against a ranked opponent.

RPI No. 18 Kansas (15-6, 3-4 Big 12) came into Hilton Coliseum on Oct. 22 to square off with the ISU volleyball team (11-7, 3-4 Big 12) and were sent back to Lawrence, Kan. empty-handed.

The Cyclones remained perfect at home in conference play and moved to 3-4 in the Big 12 on the season.

The first set was a disappointment for Iowa State, which has focused heavily on trying to bring more energy to the court to begin matches.

The Jayhawks pounced on the Cyclones early and did not look back, taking the first set 25-18.

Iowa State was the embodiment of inefficiency in the first stanza, posting an abysmal hitting percentage of .079, while being out-blocked by Kansas 3-0.

Whatever ISU volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said to the team between sets had a major effect, as Iowa State stormed out to a 5-0 lead to start set number two.

Iowa State held on easily for a comfortable 25-16 win.

The story of the third set was very similar to that of the second, with the Cyclones jumping ahead of the Jayhawks 11-4.

Third sets have been pivotal for the Cyclones in matches tied 1-1, as they have not won a match all season after falling behind 2-1.

Kansas was unable to muster a comeback in set number three, as Iowa State captured the set 25-17.

The Jayhawks found some fight in the fourth, which was much tighter from start to finish. Kansas took set four 25-21 and pushed the match to a deciding fifth stanza.

Iowa State led 2-1 in its previous outing on Oct. 18 at Texas Tech and let the match slip away after dropping the fourth set to the Red Raiders.

History did not repeat itself against Kansas, as Iowa State fended off its opponent, winning 15-12.

Sophomore hitter Ciara Capezio led the way for the Cyclones with 16 kills, while junior libero Caitlin Nolan posted a mind-boggling 43 digs, which is tied for a Big 12 record.

Iowa State’s next match is against Baylor at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 in Waco, Texas.
