Old Main Street’s Top Bars

Ames’ bar scene has a wide variety of choices for its permanent residents and students, and they’re torn between Campustown’s college bars and Main Street’s sit-down style. Although Main Street’s bars are a bit out of the way for ISU students, they’re well worth the commitment. Here are a few of old downtown’s most noted and favorite.

Old Maine Brewing Company– Old Maine is the go-to establishment for local beer, well-priced burgers, steaks and a welcoming atmosphere. It may be known for the beer it has, but the food, especially the weekend brunch menu, is phenomenal itself. Their beer list consists of year-round brews, seasonal flavors, and the exclusives that they brew in-house.

London Underground– London Underground brings the classic British-style pub across the pond to Ames. With a great list of import and craft beers, as well as tons of drink specials, this pub is the ideal nightlife spot for college students.

Whiskey River– Whiskey River is an Ames favorite for its modern look while keeping the aged-pub feel intact. It has over 170 wines, liquors and beers while providing a variety of American cuisine choices.

Della Viti– Della Viti really stands out in Ames because it was the town’s first and only self-serve wine bar. They have around 50 different wines available at any given time and also have craft beers to taste. They always provide the well-known types of wine, but also strive to bring their guests lesser known flavors and names to build their wine list.
