ISU men’s basketball player Melvin Ejim and ISU gymnast Michelle Shealy were each chosen as 2014 Big 12 Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday. It’s the first time Shealy has received the honor and second year in a row for Ejim.

In his senior campaign, Ejim averaged 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game en route to earning the Big 12 Player of the Year award and helped lead the Cyclones to their second-ever Big 12 title.

Ejim, a senior in history, holds a 3.70 grade point average and has said he plans to attend law school in the future.

Shealy, also a senior, has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team three times in her career. Earlier this year she was honored with the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12’s highest academic award.

Shealy earned All-America honors last season on the beam with her fifth-place finish at nationals, but was sidelined early in the 2013-14 season due to injury.

Shealy majors in elementary education and will be student teaching in New Zealand in the fall.

Iowa State was the only school with multiple athletes selected as recipients.
