ISU tennis claims runner-up spots at FGCU Spring Invite

The ISU tennis team claimed the runner-up positions in both Flight A singles and Flight A doubles after a four-day weekend at the FGCU Spring Invite on Monday.

Junior Ksenia Pronina, advanced to the final round of top-flight singles Sunday after out-dueling Arkansas State’s Tamara Slijepcevic, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Pronina met FGCU’s Sarah Means on Monday for the tournament title, but came up short, losing to Means, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Ana Gasparovic and junior Meghan Cassens earned a 7-5 semifinal victory over FGCU’s Sarah and Elizabeth Means in top-flight doubles, but fell short in the finals against Polina Konop and Tatiana Larina of Northwestern State of Louisiana, losing 6-1.

Other results in Flight A singles saw Samantha Budai win in a backdraw over Janie Nowland of Arkansas State, 7-6, 6-1, while Cassens was defeated by FGCU’s Breana Stampfil, 6-2, 6-0.

Gasparovic and freshman Lydia Green won backdraws in Flight B singles Monday, while senior Emma Waites lost a battle to Stephanie Cardullo of Florida Atlantic, 6-3, 7-5.

Junior Caroline Andersen, also won a victory versus Arkansas State’s Sofia Krsmanovic in Flight C singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Iowa State will take to the court again Jan. 24th, kicking off the home season against Southeast Missouri State and Nebraska-Omaha. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. Friday.
