The ISU tennis team fell short in its opening campaign at the FGCU Spring invite as they were ousted 6-1 Friday by Florida Golf Coast in Fort Meyers, Fla.

Sophomore Ana Gasparovic slated the Cyclones sole victory at No. 4 singles over FGCU’s Bettina Botha in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6, 5-7, 10-5. Meghan Cassens forced a third set in her match against FGCU’s Johanna Sterkel at No. 3 singles, but ultimately lost the contest 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

Iowa State was swept in the doubles matches, earning FGCU an early lead that they would not relinquish.

Gasparovic and Cassens joined forces in the closest of the doubles matches, falling 6-4 to Botha and Sterkel at No. 2 doubles. Ksenia Pronina and Samantha Budai were defeated 6-3 by FGCU’s Sarah and Elizabeth Means at No. 1 doubles. Caroline Andersen and Emma Waites lost 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Iowa State will get another shot at FGCU over the weekend-long event, and will also square off against Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic University, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana. The first singles matches are set to kick off at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
