Cyclone Hockey tops Mountaineers

The Cyclones (10-10-1) were fired up and ready to get back to work against West Virginia (3-8).

Iowa State jumped out to an early lead with a goal at 2:40 in the first period from junior forward Chris Cucullu. Senior forward David Kurbatsky added another goal at 5:48 to increase the Cyclones’ lead to 2-0.

The Mountaineers wasted no time in the second period, tallying their first goal at 48 seconds.

Sophomore forward James Buttermore came firing back scoring the third goal of the game for the Cyclones at 2:36 in the second period. Responding quickly, West Virginia once again tightened the game, adding another goal at 4:53.

Buttermore responded with his second goal of the period just seconds later. Junior forward Jon Feavel and senior defenseman Justin Wilkinson both added goals of their own, bringing the lead to 6-2 for Iowa State to finish out the second period.

Freshman defenseman Matt Szpak would slip one past the Mountaineer goalie in the third period and Iowa State took the 7-2 victory against West Virginia.

Junior goalie Scott Ismond stopped 27 of 29 shots on the night.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
