The Cyclones will have three freshman joining the softball squad next season that have earned All-state honors in the state softball tournament this summer.

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association awarded Allie Ferguson from North Mahaska, Riley Fisher from Des Moines East and Aly Cappaert from Ankeny All-state honors.

Cappaert said winning the state title was the main goal for the team heading into the 2012 season.

“Being one of the six seniors on the team, I knew it was our last chance to play together and win it,” Cappaert said. “To me, winning the state title was an amazing moment. After I made the final out in the game I just knew all my hard work paid off.”

During the season, Cappaert was walked a total of 55 times – which led the state. Despite being walked numerous times, Cappaert checked in with a batting average of .544 and had 62 hits.

Cappaert said she’s getting ready for the change in competition levels, coming from high school and into the Big 12.

“It’s going to be so neat being able to to play against Big 12 competition,” Cappaert said. “I’ve been working on the summer workouts for a couple months now to prepare for the fall season, so I think I will be ready.”
