Eight months later, the people have spoken.

Iowa Corn unveiled the new fan-voted Cy-Hawk Series Trophy on Tuesday in response to its initial design from August that sparked controversy.

“It looks a lot better, it looks a little less corny,” said Nick Van Engen, junior in biology. “Let’s be honest, the old one looks a little corny.”

The “mascot football” design, which received 8,002 of the 10,282 votes cast, was one of three conceptual designs that were concocted as a culmination of the more than 500 ideas submitted by fans. Voting took place from April 14 to 30.

“I think it’s been very positive,” said Iowa Corn CEO Craig Floss of the reception the new trophy has gotten from fans. “At the end of the day, it’s been a very democratic process. The majority of the people have been heard and I would like to think that there’s no one who should complain about that type of a process.”

Craig Cunningham, senior in biology, said he likes the inclusion of Cy and Herky on the trophy because it better illustrates the series than the old trophy did.

“That really exemplifies what the trophy is for,” Cunningham said. “It’s Iowa State versus Iowa and those two figures are not going to change over time. It’s got corn on there, that’s pretty symbolic of Iowa.”

Floss said the old trophy’s construction process in collaboration with the two schools experienced some miscommunication, which contributed to the controversial design that resulted.

“Obviously, if we thought it was going to get the kind of review that it did by the fans, we probably would’ve never introduced it to begin with,” Floss said of the old trophy. “The premise we were working under [was] that we were going to try to create an image that could work across sports, across genders, because that’s all part of the criteria for the school to win the Cy-Hawk Series — which has an academic component.”

The expectation of the fans, Floss said, was to have a football-related trophy since it was originally replacing the old Cy-Hawk Trophy that was used for just football. Floss said the company then decided it would be best to create a new trophy — this time for football — that would be voted on with input from fans.

The trophy will make its debut when Iowa State plays Iowa at Kinnick Stadium on Sept. 8.
