General Manager job description

The general manager is responsible for the management of all aspects of the Iowa State Daily, with the exception of the editorial department, in accordance with the policies and goals set by the Publication Board.

Management duties include, but are not limited to, implementation of Publication Board directives; financial accountability; business management for the production and distribution of the student newspaper; supervision of office staff and department heads (except editor-in-chief and editorial adviser); long-range planning; marketing of the Iowa State Daily to the Iowa State community; ensuring that a commitment to teamwork and cooperation exists among all departments of the Iowa State Daily; advising student staff about newspaper office management; coordination of newspaper office policies, procedures, and strategies with the Publication Board and other university offices and officials.

Full-time,12-month position.

Salary commensurate with experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Approve all invoices for payment.
  • Solicit competitive bids for services and supplies.
  • Maintain all contracts with outside vendors.
  • Serve as liaison with commercial printer.
  • Handle all purchasing (with board approval).
  • Monitor accounts for credit and approve credit for new accounts.
  • Coordinate annual outside audit.
  • Develop and monitor yearly budget with Finance Committee and bookkeeper.
  • Advise the Publication Board with regard to current financial status of the paper and suggest changes to improve financial conditions.
  • Work closely with the student board committees including the Equipment & Finance Committee and Personnel Committee and provide them with the information they require.
  • Oversee student employment practices and hiring.
  • Coordinate special events.
  • Handle memberships and make travel arrangements.
  • Provide career information and help for students.
  • Serve as liaison with legal council, providing information and soliciting advice.
  • Look after the upkeep of building and grounds.
  • Manage students who handle the circulation and delivery of the Daily.
  • Keep the Publication Board informed and up-to-date on things that are taking place at the Daily.
  • Serve as liaison of the Offices for the Vice President of Business and Finance, Journalism Department and Community.
  • Work directly with the sales adviser to set goals, establish rates, budget and plan annual promotion calendar.
  • Hold weekly staff meetings and individual meetings with all professional staff.
  • Be responsible for public relations of the Daily. 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; minimum of five years of managerial experience; knowledge of newspaper operations and budgeting. Teaching and advertising sales experience preferred.
