Dress like a First Lady

Standing beside their husbands, waving to the crowds and starting philanthropic causes have been some of the tasks of the first ladies in United States history. What might not be in the job description is being thrown into the spotlight in the world of fashion. While the first ladies don’t walk down the red carpet, they attend inaugural balls, foreign dinners and campaign events with crowds of people watching.

Whether they realize it or not, these women have done everything from starting fads to establishing timeless wear. One such icon is Jackie Kennedy who is best known for beginning the famous “pill box” hat fad back in the 1960s, as well as being a trailblazer in wearing wide leg pantsuits. Nancy Reagan was known to wear the color red with almost anything, and the designer ball gowns she would wear. Today, Michelle Obama has certainly made headlines with her flair for fashion. She made the 2008 People of the year for best dressed, and she is known for beautifully tailored suits that show off her toned arms.

Dressing like your favorite first lady can be done by simply looking for some key items in your wardrobe. A black sheath dress paired with pearls is a classic look, while a pencil skirt topped with a lightweight blouse and matching suit coat will certainly look professional.

For shoes, nothing to high seems to be the norm among the first ladies. Plain black pumps that are comfortable to walk in are always in style and a must for any busy first lady.

Whether Jackie is your fashion icon, or Michelle, finding timeless outfits to resemble these famous ladies will become a must to add to your wardrobe.
