Finch, Sorenson earn automatic NCAA bids

Andrew Sorenson and Ryak Finch earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships — on March 15 to 17 in St. Louis — on Thursday, when the NCAA released its qualifier allocations for each conference.

The Big 12 received 31 overall bids for the tournament with four each for 125 and 165 pounds, notching spots for both Finch and Sorenson. The rest of the bids — two for heavyweight and three for the seven remaining classes — will be determined at the Big 12 Championships on March 3 in Columbia, Mo.

Automatic bids are awarded to each conference based on three key factors of their starting wrestlers’ regular season: Division I winning percentage, rating percentage index and coaches rankings.

Since all four starters in the Big 12 met the criteria for 125 and 165 pounds, they all earned automatic bids regardless of how they do in the Big 12 Championships.

Sorenson, a redshirt senior, is 25-1 this season and is 17-0 in dual action. Finch, a redshirt freshman, is 14-6 and 10-6 in duals.
