Cyclones place five wrestlers at Midlands Championships

The second day of the 49th Midlands Championships didn’t go as smoothly as the first day of action for Iowa State, but in the end the Cyclones placed five wrestlers and finished in eighth place.

After redshirt freshman Luke Goettl upset two ranked wrestlers on Thursday, he took the mat in the semifinals against Kendric Maple of Oklahoma and fell in a major decision, 13-1.

Goettl was the only unseeded wrestler in the tournament to advance to the semifinals, but after losing that match, he dropped the next two and finished sixth for the Cyclones.

Andrew Sorenson was the lone other Cyclone to advance to the semifinals, and for the first time this season, he lost. Facing Steve Fittery, a graduate last year, Sorenson lost 11-3. Sorenson then lost his next match before knocking off Oklahoma’s Bubby Graham for a fifth-place finish.

Redshirt junior Matt Gibson brought Iowa State its best finish of the tournament. The unseeded Gibson lost his opening match on Thursday, but never lost again in the tournament, beating the second, fourth, eighth and 10th seeds along the way to eventually placing third.

Iowa State also saw unattached Tanner Weatherman place fifth and Mikey England place eighth.

The Cyclones will return to the mat Tuesday when they travel to Tempe, Ariz., to wrestle the Arizona State Sun Devils.
