GSB president issues executive veto to be discussed at last meeting

In its last meeting of the semester, the Government of the Student Body will meet with the Ames City Council and vote on 11 bills Wednesday. An executive veto was also issued Tuesday.

GSB President Dakota Hoben has issued a veto of the bill “Funding Helmets for ISU Recreational Hockey Club,” which gave $500 in funding to the Iowa State Recreational Hockey Club for helmets. The bill was approved on Nov. 16 by a vote of 21-14-1. In order for GSB to overturn Hoben’s veto, GSB must have a two-thirds majority vote in favor of overturning the veto.

“It is my strong belief that GSB has rules in place for a reason, and exerting those efficiently and effectively is in the best interest of students,” said Hoben, speaking in accordance to the rule about funding first-year clubs. “I do not believe that it is beneficial for Senate to decide when and under what circumstances the rules should apply to one particular group but not another.”

Hoben went on to say in his statement that he was putting some consistency and legitimacy back in to the GSB funding process with the veto. Under GSB funding rules, GSB does not fund first-year clubs because some clubs fail during their first year.

The 11 bills being voted on are: “Funding Instructors for DESCARGA,” “Trackers for Team PrISUm,” “Funding printing for the Green Umbrella,” “Funding Sir Magazine,” “Funding the Green Roof,” “Funding Cycling Club,” “Appointment 2012-2013,” “Bylaw Revisions Chapters 1-7,” “Bylaw Chapters 8-10 & 12-17,” “Bylaw Chapter 11” and “Replenishing the Senate Discretionary Account.”

One of the key bills on this week’s agenda is “Funding the Green Roof,” which is asking for $33,958 to be allocated from the Capital Projects Account to the Landscape Club to create a green roof on the north side of the Memorial Union.
