Polar opposite games for Cyclones in Tempe

The first road trip for the Cyclone hockey team ended in both a bad loss and a solid victory. After a humbling 7-2 loss at the hands of the Sun Devils on Friday, Iowa State (12-2-1-1) rebounded to earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory Saturday.

Arizona State (12-2-1) scored the first four goals of the weekend before Iowa State had an answer.

After the hosts tallied five, coach Al Murdoch pulled starting goaltender Peter Alexander, who had taken a hit early in the first period. Jon Feavel scored the two goals for the Cyclones in the 7-2 defeat.

Junior Paul Karus got the start in the series finale and shut down the Sun Devils through two periods.

But after Arizona State drew first blood quickly in the third, a goal by Derek Kohles and a power-play goal by Jake Rombach pushed Iowa State over the edge. The Cyclones held on for the 2-1 victory against the No. 3 Sun Devils.

The No. 6 Cyclones return home next weekend for a series against Minot State.
