The Director of Residence was a keynote speaker at the Government of the Student Body meeting Wednesday night.

Pete Englin said the Department of Residence pays $10 million a year on mortgages that took place between 2003 and 2005.

Englin added that $3.3 million was spent on Willow Hall to improve climate control.

Englin said current facility reinvestment projects include new furniture in common areas, heat and smoke detection systems, surveillance and Internet upgrades.

Future goals include upgrades for bathrooms, windows and improvement of student room furniture.

He said there are 4,400 incoming freshman and 1,800 transfer students expected for the next school year.

“I don’t see us selling square feet, I see us selling the students an experience when they live in the dorm,” Englin said.

He said 161 students currently living in temporary housing and the University spends $7 to $8 million dollars on 2.9 million square feet of living space annually.

GSB allocated $1,000, a quarter of the total cost of the “Beat Iowa Bash,” which will take place Sept. 9 at Frederickson Court.
