Digital Media: Web Producers

Web producers serve as the editorial staff members on the Iowa State Daily’s digital media team. The digital media team is a small team focused on improving the Daily’s digital products. Web producers will work alongside editorial employees to generate content for the Daily’s digital products.

Knowledge:

  • Understands technology and how it will be used by communities to deliver new value
  • Grasp of AP style and journalistic writing methods

 

Experience:

  • Knowledge of digital storytelling methods and social media
  • Strong knowledge of journalism practices, ethics and experience working under tight deadlines
  • Ability to produce digital content, including, but not limited to photos, videos, photo galleries, live events and Storify presentations
  • Experience using proprietary and open-source content management systems (ex: TownNews’ BLOX, proprietary; WordPress, open-source) are a plus, but not required
  • HTML and CSS skills are a plus, but not required

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the online editor and digital media team to maintain a consistent image on the Daily’s digital products
  • Assist the online editor and newsroom editors in managing the Daily’s social media presence – ensure that stories are being promoted, inquiries are responded to and assist in crowdsourcing ideas
  • Create original content for the Daily’s digital products, including, but not limited to articles, photo galleries, video, live chats and Storify presentations
  • Post articles and videos from the Daily’s wire services on the website
  • Solicit and approve events for the Daily’s community calendar
  • Monitor comments on iowastatedaily.net, alert editors/reporters to comments needing a response, and ensure inappropriate comments are removed in a timely manner
  • Approve accounts for new users in accordance with Daily policies
  • Assist in the coverage of breaking news – help assemble content from multiple sources and determine the best presentation methods for the Daily’s digital products
  • Publish the Daily’s email newsletters through the CMN platform
  • Constantly monitor the Daily’s digital products – correct or alert the appropriate person to problems with navigation, displays and content
  • Other responsibilities as delegated by the online editor

 

Manages: Web producers do not manage any employees. They will work closely with reporters and other content producers, but do not manage these employees.

Reports to: Web producers report to the online editor, who reports to the director of digital media and editor in chief. Web producers will also work closely with the newsroom’s desk editors, but will not report directly to these employees.
